Who We Are
Established in 1986, the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes, formerly "Victoria County Humane Society" serves the City of Kawartha Lakes. The Animal Adoption Centre at 111 McLaughlin Road in Lindsay opened in October 1999 and serves as the base of operations for the Society's multi-faceted animal welfare work. The Society is a registered charitable organization that does not receive any on-going funding from any level of government. In order to continue our work, we depend on the generous support of the community, and the tireless efforts of many animal loving volunteers.
The Adoption Centre provides shelter, food and love for domestic animals until they are adopted into new homes. While they await adoption, a Visiting Program enables some of these animals to bring joy to individuals living in retirement and nursing homes.
The Society also co-ordinates trained volunteer O.S.P.C.A. agents who investigate reports of animal cruelty, abuse, and/or neglect; providing education and assistance at every opportunity.
Volunteers and new Society members are always welcome, so come out and "help us help the animals"!
Thinking of Adopting one of Our Dogs? Please read!
Thank you for considering a dog from the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes. This website allows a tremendous number of people to quickly and easily see the dogs that the HSKL has available for adoption. Our goal is to find the best possible home for each dog. Some dogs may not be suitable for every person or family, and in the interest of both dogs and adopters, we reserve the right to select the most appropriate home. Please read the behavior descriptions carefully to ensure that a dog is a good match for you. To ensure the best possible match, the HSKL asks that all members of the family - both human and animal - be present for the adoption visit. Our staff can provide some information by telephone, but please be aware that the HSKL receives many calls a day, and while we make every effort to return calls quickly, existing resources do not allow us to ensure that every call is returned in less than 24 hours. The HSKL maintains request files for people seeking a specific breed or if there isn't an appropriate match on the day you come in. Thank you for your interest in our wonderful dogs!
Adopting a Friend
When you come to our adoption centre to adopt a pet, it is a good idea that you come as a family to be sure everyone is compatible with the pet. We generally do not let any pet go home the same day as we prefer you think things over and are sure this is what you want as pets are a lifetime commitment. Once you have decided on the pet you want to adopt we have you fill in an adoption application.
Our adoption fees are $150.00 for an adult cat, and $225.00 for an adult dog. This price includes microchip, deworming, vaccines and spay or neuter. Kittens and pups that are too young to spay or neuter are the same price. If you have them altered within six months from the date of adoption we offer you a rebate of $75.00.
