The number of animals that the Adoption Centre, on McLaughlin Road in Lindsay, can take in is far fewer than those rescued or abandoned. Today, a visitor to the Centre would find cats housed in every conceivable corner, so that as many animals as possible can be saved.
Even so, many animals must be turned away.
Without an expanded facility, the Society's ability to help animals is seriously compromised. The over-crowded conditions put the health of the animals, staff and the volunteers at risk.
The new shelter will address our needs by providing an adequate ventilation system to ensure the health of both animals and volunteers, separate room for treating animals under quarantine, and space for volunteers and staff to support their work.
To address health and safety and capacity requirements, a new shelter will be constructed on the lot adjacent to the existing shelter. This lot is owned by the HSKL.
The Provincial-Federal government grant requires that the HSKL raise one-third ($400,000) of the project cost through its own fundraising efforts. To date, $140,000 has been secured (including OSPCA seed funding of $100,000).
Each dollar contributed by businesses or individuals in our community is matched by a $2 contribution from the provincial-federal grant. The community's investment to improve our capacity to care for our pets and animals will build a facility that has three times the value of our contribution.
With the launch of a high volume spay-neuter clinic, HSKL will become a leader in animal welfare in our country.
Your support for the HSKL will not only increase our capacity to care for our community's lost and abandoned animals, it will also help to provide proper care, spay and neuter programs, and further our education initiatives. Together, we can advance responsible pet ownership in our community.
There are many ways to help. The Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes is a volunteer-based organization relying not only on the financial generosity of our community members, but also on the willingness of individuals to give their time and talents to our cause.
Make a donation, become a member, volunteer to walk a dog or cuddle a cat. Let the love you have for your animal encourage others.
